Vancouver Christian School
LOCI and Omicron, together with Westbourne projects, worked together as part of a comprehensive design team to design and oversee construction of the Vancouver Christian School’s Mons Drive campus. A complete tear-down and replacement facility, the new school features outdoor play and social spaces, playgrounds, and active and passive play elements. Given the site’s significant grade changes, one of LOCI’s challenges was to integrate the layout of spaces and circulation with retaining walls, slopes and boulder groupings. Focusing on utilizing visible sustainability as an educational tool, the design includes rain gardens to collect rainwater runoff, vertical vegetative screens to reduce expansive walls and “heat island affect”, and an accessible green roof with berms, seating and learning gardens that can be incorporated into a curriculum around food production, plant seasonality and agriculture.
